What makes Oud Zuhal different
Amouage’s Essences Collection is the house at its most technically ambitious — each fragrance built around a rare botanical at its absolute purest expression. Previous releases centred on sandalwood. Oud Zuhal breaks new ground: for the first time in the house’s history, The Essences double-infusion process turns to oud chips as its central ingredient.
The process itself is extraordinary. Pure bioethanol is aged for six months in custom French oakwood barrels at Amouage’s Muscat manufactory, then married to oud chip-infused concentrates of exceptional quality. The result is something that doesn’t smell like a typical oud fragrance — it smells like oud distilled to its very essence, layered with spice and resin in a way that feels ancient and contemporary at the same time.
Released in February 2026 to coincide with Ramadan, exclusively for the Gulf Cooperation Council region. Finding it outside the GCC is genuinely rare.
What does it smell like?
The name — Zuhal, Arabic for Saturn — tells you something about the intention. Saturn: steadfast, distant, ancient, vast. This is not a fragrance that rushes to impress you. It unfolds slowly and commands patience.
Black pepper, pink pepper, and cardamom open with a bold, medicinal spice that is immediately distinctive. Sharp and vertical — nothing soft about the opening. Then patchouli arrives and begins to amplify and earth the Assam oud underneath, which is raw, complex, and deeply animalic in the most luxurious sense of the word. Not barnyard. Not dirty. Just genuinely wild and natural in a way that most oud fragrances can only imitate.
The dry-down is where the six months of aging reveals itself — Indonesian oud and amber settling into a warm, full-bodied depth that somehow feels both ancient and weightless. Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon describes the result as remarkable, and it’s hard to argue.
Performance
At 30% concentration, performance is exceptional — this will last all day and well into the night on a single application. Projection is commanding without being overwhelming. Best in cooler weather where the oud and spice can breathe fully.
